17 years ago, the St. George School, located in Hermann Missouri hosted the first of many fund-raisers that would help them fulfill their accreditation requirements. That meant that goals needed to be in place for the upcoming years. One of the main goals that the school had was to maintain the current buildings. Repairs and regular maintenance were desperately needed but the funding to support this project was unavailable as well.
At that time, the school announced its desire to have a local fundraiser to increase the amount of resources necessary to make these kinds of changes possible. It was through this campaign that the current St. George School Dinner Auction has become possible. What started as a Big Band and Swing Dance Dinner and Auction is now a themed night of feasting and fun.
Each year a different theme is chosen based on local surroundings, events, or activities. This year marking the anniversary of the steamboat engine has led the committee to choose the theme “Rollin’ on the River” in honor of the St. Georgia Belle.
Today the event draws over 400 people and based on previous years, space is becoming extremely limited. With activities throughout the night and a live and silent auction, there is not a moment to lose. “This event sells out every year,” says Julie Clingman, principal of the school. “It’s a fun evening where people can support the mission of our wonderful school.”
St. George School has dedicated itself to educating children in the community. Some of the great resources that St. George uses to its advantage is the small classroom sizes, a faith-based education, and a desire to show students how to experience God on a daily basis.
The commitment to strong academics is not only a goal of St. George but a reality as well. Because they only offers classes up through eighth grade, most of its students attend the local high school. Many of the leading academic students at the high school level attended St. George and continue to do well after graduating. Some of the great aspects of attending St. George is the integration of technology into the classroom. This includes the use of SmartBoards within each class and they have recently been able to integrate iPads in their educational system as well.
The “Rollin’ on the River” event is poised to be a huge success. The parents, locals, and visitors have supported this event and its cause for many years. Heberle Packing is providing the meal which will include brisket and pork tenderloin.
