Before Napa Valley, Stone Hill Winery was world-renown. They were the winners of gold medals in eight of the World Fair’s including Vienna in 1873 and Philadelphia in 1876. Creatively, during prohibition, the winery cellar was used for mushroom growing. Although one would think this would be the end of the famous winery in Hermann, MO, but Jim and Betty Held bought Stone Hill Winery in 1965 and began the long and arduous journey of restoring the winery to its earlier splendor.
In 2011, Stone Hill Winery was proud to announce that their winery produced 260,000 gallons of wine. This quantity could only have been accomplished by using state-of-the-art equipment and technology. Their success is not just their technique of producing and the kind of equipment they use. The Norton grape, which is what put Stone Hill Winery and Hermann on the map, is acclaimed to dominate wine competitions on a national and international level. The wines produced by the Norton has proven time and time again that Missouri can grow a world-class grape that can turn the head of any wine enthusiast.
Tours of Stone Hill are given daily and are a main attraction in the Hermann area for all visitors.
